Pergamon Historical Values – Izmir Bergama Transfer

There are many cultural values ​​such as inns, mosques, Turkish baths and covered bazaars in the Pergamon region, which has hosted different civilizations from antiquity to the present. Other tangible cultural heritages in the region are given below.

  • Ulu Mosque: It is one of the Turkish-Islamic works of Bergama district. It is a mosque with a single minaret, built by Sultan Beyazid I. It is the oldest mosque that has survived to the present day.
  • Kurşunlu Mosque: It bears this name because its dome is covered with lead. It was built in 1439 by Safi's son, Hacı Hasan. The courtyard of the mosque was used as a cemetery until the 1990s. These tombs have been removed to the garden of Bergama Museum.
  • Emirsultan Mosque: It was built by Mustafa Ağa on behalf of Bani Emir Sultan in 1831. It was demolished by the Directorate of Foundations in 1943 on the grounds that it was dilapidated. Today, only the minaret of cut stone without a cone, some parts of its burial ground can be reached.
  • Tashan: It was built in 1432 during the reign of Sultan I. It was built with stones taken from the Ancient City of Pergamon. Today, the building is in a dilapidated condition.
  • Cukurhan: 14.-15. It is estimated that it was built in the centuries. It is the only inn in Bergama that has been preserved until today.
  • Cubic Hammam: Built in 1427, the bath was built for men only. It got its name from the cube placed on top of the pool in the locker room. The marble cube is exhibited in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
  • Tabaklar Hammam: It got this name because it was among the tanneries in the city.
  • Hacı Hekim Hammam: It is also called "double bath" because it was divided into two parts as men and women in 1513. It is assumed that there is an inscription on the threshold above the door. The bath in the city center was repaired in 2008 by the Regional Directorate of Foundations.
  • Bedesten: 16.-17. According to the building type. It is thought to have been made for centuries. In ancient times, it was known as a trading house where goods were exchanged. Today it is in a neglected state.
  • Allianoi Ancient City: It is located within the Yortanlı Irrigation Dam Pond, which is located in the northeast of Bergama district. The city, which was taken under protection during the dam works in 1994-1997, has been used as a hot spring since the end of the Hellenistic era. Looking at the architecture of the buildings in the Allianoi Health Center, it is understood that they were widely used in the Roman period. The most important reason why it was preferred in ancient times was that the water temperature was 45 degrees.
  • Elaia Ancient City: It is an old port city located 26 km southwest of Bergama district. It was one of the most important settlements in the immediate vicinity of the Pergamon Kingdom in the Hellenistic period. This port city was used by Pergamon as a trade and war port. “Elaia” meaning olive is a name of Luwian origin.
  • Perperene Ancient City: This city is located across the Aşağıbey Village, on the Bergama-Ayvalık highway. Theater, baths and temples with a capacity of 2000 people were found in Akrapol, which was unearthed as a small city. There are artifacts that could not be unearthed in the city.
  • Bergama Library: The first founder of the library is not known exactly. The book collection collection started in the first Attolas I. Period and the building was founded by Evmenes II. It has been in its time. The library building is located in the courtyard of the Temple of Athena in the center of the Acropolis. The cut stones used in the construction of the building show that it dates back to the Hellenistic period. The library was built longitudinally and is the oldest built place in ancient times.
  • Üçkemer Bridge: It is located outside the city on the Bergama Stream. The bridge, which was built during the Roman period, consists of three eyes. The bridge, which is approximately 9.50 meters long, ends parallel to the road.
  • Millet Hospital: It was built as a hospital in 1305 by a Greek named Konstanti. It served as the “Second School” in 1924, continued its education as “Kadri Primary School” in 1938 and was closed in 1972. The building is in ruins today.
  • Ancient Water Tunnel: Selinos, which went through the Red Court construction plan during the Roman period, was arranged to pass through the double tunnels made in ancient times. Thus, it formed the foundation of the temple. Since the temple was built on this waterway, it was called "neither on earth nor in the sky".
